FUN FACTS ABOUT OUR OCEANS
What do you know about the ocean? Most of us have learned several facts about the magnificent blue seas, like the different animals that dwell in these habitats or the differences in the ocean zones. Here are seven fun facts everyone should know about our oceans!
1.
Aquatic life makes the majority of our planet. 94% of the earth’s creatures live in the ocean. That’s far more than the number of creatures wandering on land.
2.
World Ocean Day is on June 8 every year. This is a special day recognized by the United Nations that honors our oceans for supporting us and many other creatures.
3.
Bodies of water can be found in the oceans. That seems a little silly, huh? It’s basically like saying there’s bodies of water in bodies of water. But scientists have discovered that lakes and rivers dissolve under the ocean's salt layers, forming seeps that create areas of flowing water.
4.
Sound is faster in the ocean. In fact, it's 4.3 faster than it usually is when traveling in the air. It explains how many marine animals are known for their strong sense of hearing to identify many sounds happening at once.
5.
Scientists have identified over 230,000 marine species. However, they suspect there’s even more than that - at least over 2 million more is their estimate.
6.
There’s still so much we don’t know about our oceans! The Ocean Service has stated that less than 5% of earth’s oceans have been discovered. That means there’s still plenty to learn and explore down there.
7.
