THE OCEAN ZONES

Okay, let’s actually dive in now. Every ocean is separated into zones - the sunlight zone, twilight zone, midnight zone, abyssal zone, and then the trenches. Each zone is filled with different species and creatures that thrive in the habitats they live in. Scroll over each zone to learn more about it.

Sunlight Zone

The zone we commonly swim in and see the most creatures from first glance. Because heat hits this zone the fastest because it’s so close up, it’s the warmest and easiest to see in. Big and small creatures live in this zone - from dolphins and whales to jellyfish and algae. This zone is also known as the Epipelagic Zone.

Twilight Zone

This zone has some light, but it’s harder to see in. That doesn’t stop many species from living here, however. Crab, krill, eels, and swordfish all live in this zone. This zone is also known as the Mesopelagic Zone.

Midnight Zone

This zone has no sunlight and very little food. Because gathering resources and seeing clearly is hard in this place, special types of species live here. Anglerfish, angelfish, eels, and slickheads thrive well in this zone. This zone is also known as the Bathypelagic Zone. The third clue is the word "consequences".

Abyssal Zone

This zone has no sunlight and very little food. Because gathering resources and seeing clearly is hard in this place, special types of species live here. Anglerfish, angelfish, eels, and slickheads thrive well in this zone. This zone is also known as the Bathypelagic Zone.

The Trenches

The deepest you could get! Very little is known about life down in the trenches because water pressure is high and temperatures are freezing cold, but scientists are still searching hard. Several organisms do live here, such as sea cucumber and snailfish. Many of these creatures feed off dead ones since finding food is nearly impossible.
